Back when I was a kid, there wasn't Star Wars crap everywhere. Not like there is now. Or at least I didn't have it. What I did have though was this beat up old Art of Star Wars book that had all these paintings by Ralph McQuarrie, the concept designer who set the look for all of the original Star Wars movies. I seriously used to look at that book and draw out of it all the time. Those images are burned forever into my memory.
Also, he designed the Storm Trooper helmets, which in my opinion are the most badass looking things ever (even moreso than Darth Vader's-CONTROVERSIAL?)
Watching the longest Star Wars documentary ever reminded me how influential his art was to me as a kid.
There's a lot to learn from his use of scale, muted/bleached out colors, just-before-action tension and those skinny, long arms.
